The Ultrasonic drilling machine is a drilling device that uses vibrations in order to hammer its bit through materials, as opposed to traditional drilling methods. The drill uses a piezoelectric actuator as its source of power, and utilizes a variety of 'horns' to vibrate, or hammer, its bit through the material. It was originally designed to be able to drill through very rigid rock surfaces that would otherwise be damaged by a rotary drill, but has also shown potential usefulness to the field of medicine. It is the specific characteristics of the drill that make it ideal or practical for certain situations.

In ultrasonic machining, the tool oscillates through such a small amplitude (10 microns or less) that the cutting edge remains in the material, and the force and engagement remain relatively constant. Thus, rather than compromising tool life, tool life is enhanced.

In titanium alloy, the class of metal in which the technology has delivered the most benefit, that choice has been shown to come down to a 200 to 400 percent increase in tool life or a 200 to 300 percent increase in metal removal rate

Main Parts:


The ultrasonic machining machine consist of three main parts transducer, sonotrode (also called as horn) and generator.

The function of various parts are described below

1. Transducer: The transducer mainly consists of a cylinder which is made up of piezoelectric ceramic. It converts electrical energy into mechanical vibration. Transducer then vibrates sonotrode at low amplitude and high frequency.

2. Sonotrode: It is made of low carbon steel. One end of it is connected with the transducer and other end contains tool. The sonotrode vibrates at low amplitude and high frequency and removes material from the w/p by abrasion where it contacts it.

3. Generator: The generator consists of an electronic oscillator which produces an alternating current at high frequency. The frequency produced is usually in 20kHz in ultrasonic range.
