About Ultrasonic Plastic Welding

Ultrasonic plastic welding is a kind of thermoplastic jointing technology, which makes use of friction between molecules generated by ultrasonic horn. During ultrasonic welding, two plastic part halves are pressed together under pressure, ultrasonic system transform electric energy in 50/60Hz into mechanical energy in 15KHz, 20KHz, 28KHz, 30Khz, 35Khz, 40Khz by convertor, and strengthens it by booster, then transform the energy to the horn and strengthen it again, then the horn transform it to the plastic part and generate the friction between molecules, by which the temperature at the join increases quickly to melt the plastic material at joining surface. When the melting is enough, ultrasonic stops and keep two plastic being pressed together until the jointing area is re-solidified.

Joint Design of Ultrasonic Welding

Jointing design is a critical factor to thermoplastic jointing which should be put into consideration during molding design. The style of jointing design will be defined by plastic part material, part geometry shape, requirement of welding strength, welding out-look as well as air-tightness. Application of Ultrasonic on Plastic Part Processing

 

On plastic parts assembly, ultrasonic is widely used for plastic jointing, inserting, riveting, spot welding, ultrasonic plastic forming and cutting.

 

 

 

 

1. Ultrasonic Plastic Joining:

Ultrasonic energy is strengthened and transmitted to plastic parts by horn to joint two plastic halves together at joint area with jointing line design. During welding, ultrasonic energy cases intermolecular friction and generate heating to melt the plastic jointing line, then press the two plastic halves together until re-solidification formed under pressure. It has advantages of high welding strength and air-tightness.

 

 

2. Ultrasonic Inserting:

Ultrasonic energy is strengthened and transmitted to metal parts (such as metal screws, screw nuts, etc) by horn to embed it into a formed plastic hole. During inserting, ultrasonic oscillation cases high temperature on metal part which melts plastic at the contacting surface, then forces metal part down into the hole. When the molton plastic material re-solifified after stop ultrasonic oscillation, the plastic material binds the metal part firmlly. Comparing to tradditional inserting, ultrasonic inserting has advantages of high strength, enven force, no damga to parts due to ejection, high inseting capacity, etc.

 

3. Ultrasonic Riveting/Stacking:

 

Ultrasonic energy is strengthened and transmitted by horn to plastic probe to melt it and form it into designed riveting shape, by which it can fix the other parts (can be plastic or metal) stably. It is with advantages of high capacity, beautiful stacking out-look and firm stacking performance.

 

 

 

 

4. Ultrasonic Spot Welding:

Ultrasonic energy is strengthened by horn and focused at the tooth of horn the melt one plastic part through and stick to the other part. It is use for plastic assembly which can have jointing line at the jointing area due to plastic product design condition limit. Ultrasonic Spot Welding is with advantages of high capacity and high welding strength.

 

 

 

5. Ultrasonic Plastic Forming:

It is similar with ultrasonic riveting/stacking, which ultrasonic energy is strengthened and transmitted by horn to melt plastic on outer surface and form it by horns to bind metal part firmly. It is with advantages with high capacity, firm binding, smooth and beautiful processing out-look.

 

 

 

6. Ultrasonic Plastic Cutting

It use ultrasonic energy to cutting the extra material such as rough edge, material at entrance during molding, etc, with ultrasonic horn and cutting tooling. It is with advantages of high capacity and beautiful cutting, suitable for ABS, PS, PC, etc. Note: it is unavailable for the material which is too soft or filexible.
