Last time we talked about Nomex honeycomb successfully reduced its chipping width by more than four times in ultrasonic machining module, this time we will focus on fiberglass honeycomb structure, which applies in more situations than Nomex honeycomb. 



Application of Glass Fiber Honeycomb and its difficulties in Machining

Fiberglass honeycombs are currently used in the aerospace industry for wings, nacelles, and spoilers. The fiberglass honeycomb structure has the advantage of saving material, light weight, high hardness and high rigidity. Unlike Nomex can only bear high pressure in the longitudinal direction, it can withstand multi-faceted forces. However, the cutting heat generated by the glass fiber honeycomb processing is prone to change its mechanical properties, and the conventional milling process also causes burrs and tears in the fiber layer. Difficult maintenance and high cost of repairing damaged materials are another pain points to manufacturers.



Ulttrasonic Machining on  Glass Fiber Honeycomb

With Ultrasonic high-frequency vibration assistance in machining, it can spread each cutting force to each subtle vibration, resulting in reduced cutting resistance and increased tool life. And due to dense and subtle vibrations, The cutting heat will lower down, thus, the impact of changing machinery properties eliminate. For high-hardness and high-rigidity material like fiberglass honeycomb, subtle cutting force is an essential point. Though the fixed of machining is not perfect, it can greatly reduce the damage of the material. Moreover, the vibration-assisted machining can also reduce the tearing and the chipping width since the tool and materials are not contact to each other continuously.
